  • April 26: First Egg! (114)
This large ten-minute video shows Mrs Bluetit laying her first egg of the season. The main event happens between 05:34 and 05:36, as indicated by her major contractions. It looks like seriously hard work - she's exhausted by the end of it.

The clicking noises early on have been noted by several other owners of sound-equipped nest boxes. It's not clear if these are vocalised or if it's the contractions themselves making the noise.

  • The Two Wrennies (109)
Lots of wildlife pictures, plus a nestbox diary.
  • March 14: Possible rival? (side view) (97)
Side-camera view of some strange behaviour from what I believe to be our regular male. He's first to arrive, but then shows all the signs of being very agitated; headcrest raised, and a loud trilling call. The cause of the commotion? Another Bluetit at the entrance hole. I have no idea if this is a rival male, another female, or just our regular Mrs Bluetit having a lover's tiff.
  • Bluetit Big Brother (94)
A Bluetit nestbox with pictures and videos.
  • April 23: Feisty Girl (94)
Mrs Bluetit turns in for the evening and Mr Bluetit decides now would be a good time to bring her a tasty spider. Mrs B is having none of it, but he's nothing if not persistant!

Unfortunately his antics attract the attention of a passing starling which decides to investigate the nest box. Mr Bluetit beats a hasty retreat leaving his mate to defend herself, which she does admirably.

Though you can't see the starling in this video, I watched the whole affair from a window. The starling was pretty startled by each of Mrs B's defensive squawks and quickly left the scene.
  • May 22: What goes in must come out (91)
One week down, Mr Bluetit demonstrates that what goes in must, eventually, come out...
  • June 4: Final fledgling flies the nest (side) (82)
The last Bluetit of 2008 flies the nest.
  • April 2: First nest material! (81)
It would appear that Mrs Bluetit has, at long last, made up her mind about nesting here! She brought in the first beakful of moss just before 9am this morning.
Of course, she took most of it out again soon afterwards but this is expected behaviour in the early stages of nest building.
  • Cork Nest Camera near Blarney, Ireland (80)
Another camera-equipped nestbox site. Karl's nestbox has an ingenious method for moving the camera around without disturbing the residents!
  • May 27: Older and Bolder (78)
One of the chicks is becoming quite bold now, and frequently attempts to leave the nestcup.

Here the youngster shows just how much it has grown in under two weeks, and almost manages to pull down the Great Wall of Wool. It has also started making the familiar "feed me" call of fledgling Bluetits.
